Calcium carbonate

Calcium carbonate is a chemical compound with the chemical formula CaCO3. It is a common substance found in rocks as the minerals calcite and aragonite (most notably as limestone, which is a type of sedimentary rock consisting mainly of calcite) and is the main component of eggshells, gastropod shells, shellfish skeletons and pearls. Things containing much calcium carbonate or resembling it are described as calcareous. Calcium carbonate is the active ingredient in agricultural lime and is created when calcium ions in hard water react with carbonate ions to create limescale. It has medical use as a calcium supplement or as an antacid, but excessive consumption can be hazardous and cause hypercalcemia and digestive issues.

2. Scientists identified the minerals as calcium carbonate, found in limestone and chalk, and sheet silicate.
3. It makes the water more acidic and lowers the concentration of calcium carbonate marine animals use to make their shells.
4. The models project that: "Southern Ocean waters will begin to become undersaturated with respect to aragonite, a form of calcium carbonate, by the year 2050.
5. Knowing that the pearl oyster uses carbon dioxide to construct its calcium carbonate shell, a Canada–based company called CO2 Solution developed and patented a technology that converts carbon dioxide emissions into a water–based solution of bicarbonate ions, which can be turned into pure carbon dioxide gas or solid calcium carbonate.
